the visions of demons

2001-12-14

They were running. She had enlisted the vampire's help, because she had nowhere else to turn. They went to the large home of a prominent family in the city, and down to the basement, where an old, blind man lived. They believed themselves to be safe, because he was blind. They took the child to him.

As they sat and spoke to the blind man, across the darkened dungeon, a demon opened his eyes. One was milky and sightless, the other clear and bright. It was a demon that served the blind and enabled them to see. The woman and vampire fell asleep, helpless. The blind man nodded off as well.

Far away, a mass of demons stirred in a darkened room. They all opened their eyes, half clear and half blind.

"Master," one said, "we have found the baby."

Across the room, in the shadows, the master leaned forward. "But how?" he asked increduously. "You can not convert the light of the child into a light you can see."

"We have." A vision opened up in the center of the room, revealing the demon's view of the baby. The baby stretched out his hands toward the Sight Demon in the dungeon, cooing and happy. In turn, the vision of the child seemed to reach towards the Sight Demons in the distant, dark room.

The sight of the demon had revealed the demon side in both the woman and vampire. When they awoke, the vampire leaned over to see if the woman was all right, and she screamed at the sight of him, winged and grey and lumpy. He didn't understand why she was screaming, but afraid, ran.

The others in the castle caught him, as his demon visage faded away.

"See, that's the cage we'll get for Julian." I pointed down an aisle to a tall, multiple-storied wire cat cage.

"Oh, wow!" Jess exclaimed at the size of it.

Paige made a face. "Well, it's better than death," she muttered and walked off.

"Sometimes," I said quietly.
