whispering about water
2001-12-25
I was in Xandy’s stall at a large barn. The stall was like a room, and almost completely closed in except over the door. Mom and I were there, as well as some of my friends. Xandy didn’t have any water. We talked, in a whisper, about various things, such as his water and deworming, which I made a joke about. Suddenly, on the PA, we heard Phyllis’ voice. She said sternly that we were not to whisper about water and that we all needed to stay put until the ravens come. She would release the ravens and we would need them as a sort of pass to get out of the barn. The rest of the barn milled about. There are a lot of people, and most are upset about being stuck there. Part of the barn was like a store. I found a game with beautiful pictures of birds printed on cards. My mom told me not to carry it around, and I looked at the price – 13,000 dollars. Vanessa was there. I talked with some of the other people. I was trying to learn something – a language? – out of a book. I’ve read the entire thing, but some parts are highlighted and I was supposed to go to a woman who would tutor me. I found her sitting at a round table at the back of a class – perhaps kindergarten – and I told her about how I was supposed to be tutored. We talked for a while about the things in the book and I told her how much I knew. Later I went back to the rest of the shop. I saw Phyllis. I explained that Xandy accidentally got sea water and wasn’t feeling good and that’s why we were whispering. Phyllis said yes, she had noticed he was ill and had no water. I asked why, then, had she closed down the barn, and she said it was mostly because of what we’d said about worms – how to deal with them. I couldn’t remember what we’d said. I was looking at pillows. I wanted to decorate some. I couldn’t decide on the fabric. I was looking at green and red fabrics and ribbons.
