Last Night :: Every Night :: Tomorrow Night
teeny tiny bat, teeny tiny bat
2002-01-12
I was in math class, sitting somewhat near the front of the class. My friend sat next to me, and we didn't take the class very seriously. We goofed around quite a bit. The teacher, a rough looking young woman, gave us dirty looks as she explained how to do the math problems, then gave us our assignments. The math was very easy for me, and I whizzed through the problems. I thought I was done, having done 20 or 30 of them, and looked up to the board where she had written the assignment and saw it was 1-40; I didn't worry about it, since I could do the remaining few at home, and they were very easy. It felt like a lot of boring busywork to me. I fiddled around in my locker as everyone else worked. It was close enough to get to without leaving my seat. It was full of stuff; papers, supplies, books and so on. I also had a stereo in the bottom. It was suddenly playing music rather loudly. I wasn't too worried, and pushed stop. It started playing again, and I was very irritated. The teacher scowled at me, and I was a little uncomfortable, but still not too worried. I tried to eject the CD but it kept sucking it back in, and playing snatches of loud music. Finally, I just figured screw it. School was over and I started to walk home. For some reason, the teacher was walking with me. I was also with my sister. We walked from essentially the point where our elementary school was, just a block away from our house, only I don't recall actually seening the school. The row of forest that used to be there was still there, but behind, where there were a few fields, there were large fields, very busy with various crops. I looked up at the powerlines behind the houses across the street from mine (strange perspective change), and saw baby bats hanging from them, and from the trees. I pointed them out to everyone. They had big heads, proportionately, and looked somewhat cartoonish. They were several colors, including a lot of pale cream-colored ones. As we were walking home from school, the teacher and I decided to go around behind the row of trees and walk over the fields and see the bat-babies. Jess stayed at the street and waited. We talked about guano a bit... I said it was a bit more like bird poo than other mammal poop, and that bird poop was called guano too. We could see it on the ground, and it was in lines like the powerlines above. We looked up and could see tons of baby bats, squeaking and chirping. We walked down the field, back towards the street, where I found Jess and insisted she had to see them too, so we did the loop again, showing Jess the guano and bats, and then heading home. At home, Jess was making appointments for herself. She had to make a dentist appointment and a doctor appointment. She had gone to the dentist appointment and mom and I were listening to messages on the answering machine, where it was before the remodeling (kitchen wall), trying to figure out if she had the doc appointment, and if so when it would be. I was supposed to go with her. Xander had left a message on our machine. We knew he was in town. However, the message had been meant to go to the New York police. He was making a collect call to them, and begged them to call him back. Mom and I exchanged bemused glances.
