i'll never get to a prom...

2002-01-15

Jenny invited me to go to the (or a) prom with her. I was very excited because I'd never gone to a prom or formal dance before. We would go in her car. I went out and we were going to get in, and I noticed she had parked on the sidewalk, and on the wrong side, since she only intended to be there for a few minutes. It was night, and her black car glinted in the streetlights.

We got in, and Jenny started out. She looked behind her, and there was a cop car pulling in where she had been parked. She asked nervously, "Just the red lights, that doesn't mean they mean for us to pull over, does it?" I said it was probably because of how she'd parked. The cop cars went the other way, so we figured we were okay.

We drove down Rock Creek, and I thought about the coming prom. I was very excited. We talked a bit about it as we drove. We drove into an area with trees on either side... it looked like highland type scrub, drought-tolerant type trees. I saw a gorgeous evergreen tree covered in purple berries. I exclaimed and turned around in my seat to see it, saying how beautiful it was and that I'd have to get one for my own yard. On one side of the road was a steep drop.

Behind us, a cop car came up, lights on, and Jenny, panicking, made to pull over. The road here was dirt, and she pulled off to a small area off the road. As she did so, the car hit a big bump. The cops pulled up behind us.

Jenny got out of the car and stood in front of it. As I tried to get out, a shopping cart started toward the car. The cops had sent it. I jumped out of the car, but as the shopping cart hit it, it jerked forward, almost hitting me. I scrambled out of the way as the car went tumbling down the embankment. I was shaking and feeling tearful, but Jenny had a look of calm on her face.

The cops came up to us. A female cop held out a plastic bag that was full of stickers and similar things. She said they had pulled us over because we'd dropped this a ways back. She said she'd called our insurance company and told them to hurry up, because she was sorry about all of this.

I wandered around. Down the embankment, it was sparsely treed, and there was a sort of enclosure or lean-to, perhaps made out of a tree. Jenny (or it might have been Amanda) and I sat inside it, with a man. I desperately tried to keep from stepping in the leaves in the bottom, which seemed to be fallen oak leaves, and pressed myself up against the walls. The man leered at me. He was a weresnake. He took his snake-visage (which looked fairly snake-like but had whiskers, which struck me as wrong) and started to caress me, touching my neck. He was venomous, and just barely pricked me with his fang. I was sure he was going to eat me, and terrified.

I went back up the hill. There were many zoomorphs. Several of them sat down and were going to eat fried chicken. One was a black panther. I came close, but was hoping there was something vegetarian for me to eat. They all closed their eyes and bowed their heads in prayer. This was more tradition than actual religion, because it gave the opportunity for the anthro vultures to come and take some food before the others began eating, and they weren't supposed to look at the vultures. The black panther turned his head towards the vultures when they took the food, sniffing, his nose working furiously, but he didn't open his eyes, respectfully.
